In this delightful, 3-part, interview, Rae Kinsbury recounts the last ten years of Friendships Groups between Australia and East-Timor and the goals for the next ten years.
Recorded just after the successful conclusion of the Friendship conference in Maubissi over 27-28 August 2010, Rae chats to Michael O’Connell on Sustainable Options about the Friendship Groups, the people, the challenges and the joys of participating in this wonderful process in a beautiful country.
The Friendship Groups in Australia and Timor-Leste began in reality in 1999 when Abel Guterres as CNRT representative approached then Cr Rae Perry as a friend and Local Government Councillor to discuss how they might respond to the question of ‘How communities in Australia could support good development of communities in Timor-Leste? Together they decided to build a new model of community-to-community support called ‘Friendship’ groups between communities in Australia and Timor-Leste.
The Australia Timor-Leste Friendship movement has committed itself to continuing the Friendship process for the next ten years. At the end of the first ten years of the Australia Timor-Leste Friendship movement, each of the Friendship groups attending the ‘Strengthening Friendship: People to People’ conference held in Maubisse over 27-28 August, recommitted themselves to a further ten years of Friendship with the people of Timor-Leste.
You can find more information directly from the individual Friendship Groups or via the Australia Timor-Leste Friendship Network (AusTimorFN) website at austimorfn.com.
